You’ve tried everything. You’ve taken the toner cartridge out and checked everything is working and all the packaging has been removed. You’ve shaken the cartridge from side to side. You’ve even switched the printer on and off and nothing is making that irritating little message go away. There’s nothing in the user manual to tell you what to do. And worst of all, even though you know the toner cartridge is new, the printer still won’t let you print!So you’ve just replaced your Brother Toner cartridge in your printer and the 'toner low' or 'replace toner' warning keeps popping up.


Relax. Most Brother toner printers need to be told you’ve replaced the toner cartridge. You’ll have to manually reset the counter and, luckily, this is fairly easy to do. We’ve put together a handy list of Brother toner printers and how to reset the toner count on them.

To reset the 'Toner Life End' / 'Replace Toner' message on Brother HL monochrome (black and white) printers:
Open the front cover and leave it open while completing the following steps.
Turn the printer off.
Hold the ‘go’ button (or ‘start’ button) while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on.
Release the ‘go’ button (or ‘start’ button).
Press the ‘go’ button (or ‘start’ button) 2 times.
Pause. All panel lights should be on.
Press the ‘go’ button (or ‘start’ button) 5 times. The toner light should be off (the error may be flashing). The paper light should be on or flashing.
Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

To reset the ‘Toner Life End’/'Replace Toner' message on Brother MFC monochrome (black and white) printers:
Open the door and press the Clear/Back key
Press *00
Press OK
Do not choose anything for drum replacement. When the drum replacement menu comes up, press * and then 00, then press OK.​
To reset the ‘Toner Life End’ / ‘Replace Toner’ message on Brother DCP, MFC and HL colour printers:


With the printer powered on, open the toner access door. (You will see a ‘Cover is Open’ message on the LCD screen.)
Press the ‘Clear/Back’ button to get to the ‘Reset Menu’
At the Reset Menu you can then scroll through the reset options for your printer’s toner cartridges. You will get reset options for all four colours (BK, C, Y, M). If your printer takes high yield and standard yield cartridges, there will be an option to reset either one.
Select the proper size and the colour of the toner cartridge you want to reset, then press OK.
Each cartridge must be reset individually. Press ‘1’ to reset.
Press ‘Clear/Back’ to get out of the menu, then close the door.

Reset Brother MFC-L2700dw Toner

Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps.
Display should read “Front Cover open”.
Hold the ‘OK’ button down for a few seconds.
Display should read “Replace Drum”.
DO NOT follow prompts on screen.
Type in * 0 0 (Star Zero Zero) on the keypad.
Close the cover. Your toner is now reset.

Brother HL-2130 - Reset Toner Cartridge
If your Brother HL-2130 does not reset properly after putting in a new cartridge, and is still showing a ‘toner low’ or ‘toner empty’ message, it is possible to manually reset the printer:

1. Ensure the printer is turned off.
2. Open the printer front cover.
3. Hold the Go button while turning the printer on.
4. When the Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs are on and the Ready LED is off, release the GO button. All of the LEDs will turn off.
5. Press the Go button two (2) times. The Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs will turn on.
6. Press the Go button six (6) times.
7. The Error LED should now be flashing, close the front cover.

​Brother HL-2130 - Reset Drum
After changing a DR2200 drum unit in a Brother HL-2130, the printer’s page count needs to be reset. This will turn off the drum warning light on the printer.
Simply open the front cover, and hold the GO button until all four LED’s are lit. Release the GO button and close the front cover.
